Chicago's Energy Use Benchmarking Ordinance (EUBO)

Mandates annual reporting of energy usage findings and trends, with provisions allowing the City to disclose building-specific data to the public starting from the second year of reported information.

Who Needs to Comply

Owners of residential, commercial, or municipal buildings exceeding 50,000 square feet are obligated to initiate tracking and reporting of energy consumption in accordance with the City’s compliance deadlines. Data verification by a licensed professional is mandated every three years.

Deadlines

Benchmarking reports must be submitted by June 1 annually, with data verification required once every three years. Property owners can ascertain their data verification status by referring to the compliance notification letter issued by the City, typically received by mid to late March.

Reporting Procedure

Building owners are required to submit their energy usage data to the EPA’s Portfolio Manager, facilitating comparisons with similar buildings. Contact us for more information!

Penalties

Violation of the ordinance incurs an initial fine of $100.00, with an additional fine of up to $25.00 for each day of continued violation.
