Washington State’s Clean Buildings Act sets energy performance standards for commercial buildings over 50,000 square feet, which includes large multifamily residential buildings. The law requires these buildings to meet specific energy use intensity targets by 2026, with phased targets leading up to this date. Buildings that fail to meet the standards may face penalties of up to $5,000 plus $1 per square foot of building area annually until compliance is achieved.
