The Building Benchmarking Initiative
Is a citywide program aimed at promoting energy efficiency and sustainability in commercial and multifamily properties within the city. Enacted to align with environmental goals, this initiative mandates building owners of large commercial properties (20,000 sq. ft. and above) to benchmark their buildings, with smaller commercial and multifamily properties being phased in over time.
- Phased Implementation
The implementation of the benchmarking requirement is phased as follows:
- City-owned Buildings: City-owned buildings are the first to undergo benchmarking.
- Large Commercial Properties (20K sq. ft. +): Owners of large commercial properties are required to benchmark their buildings as of June 1, 2022.
- Smaller Commercial and Multifamily Properties: Smaller commercial and multifamily properties will be phased in over time, with specific timelines for compliance to be determined and communicated by the city.
- Compliance Requirements
Building owners subject to the benchmarking requirement must track and report their energy usage using the designated benchmarking tool as specified by the city. The exact reporting process and any associated fees or requirements will be outlined in the city’s communications and guidelines.
- Program Enforcement
$100 first offence, $200 second, court appearance and court set fines thereafter.
