The Evanston Energy and Water Benchmarking Ordinance
Is a regulatory measure aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and water conservation in non-condominium buildings, condominium buildings, and city-owned properties within the city of Evanston. Adopted to align with sustainability goals, this ordinance mandates the benchmarking of energy usage using the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and submission of data to the city annually.
- Applicability of the Ordinance
The ordinance applies to three categories of buildings based on their size:
- Non-condominium buildings exceeding 20,000 square feet
- Condominium buildings exceeding 50,000 square feet
- City-owned buildings exceeding 100,000 square feet
- Compliance Requirements
Building owners covered by the ordinance are required to benchmark their energy usage using the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and submit the data to the City of Evanston annually by June 30th. Additionally, in the first year of benchmarking and subsequently every three years, owners must have their reported benchmarking information verified by a Certified Professional.
