Building Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy

Purpose of the Ordinance

Madison’s Building Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy, enacted in 2016, promotes energy efficiency through mandatory benchmarking and performance tracking.

Applicability of the Ordinance

The ordinance applies to commercial and multifamily properties of 50,000 square feet or more and public buildings of at least 10,000 square feet that do not meet performance targets.

Compliance Requirements

Building owners are required to conduct energy and water audits and participate in retuning programs if ENERGY STAR scores are below 50. Penalties include fines up to $1,000, with additional charges for continued non-compliance.
